3 Things You Should Know About our Northborough R&D Center

Northborough, Massachusetts is home to one of our fabulous Research and Development centers (that I’m thrilled to be a part of). Employees from all across Saint-Gobain work and collaborate to come up with new ideas, new and improved products and more! Northborough R&D Center (NRDC) is an exciting and great place to work so I’ve come up with these three things you should know about our NRDC!

We are a melting pot of different backgrounds, cultures, and customs with about 350 employees hailing from 30 different nations. This truly comes to light during our annual “International Day” in which members can sign up to represent a nation and bring in customary food and décor to honor that.

As a Swedish-American (born in US with my dad a 1st generation immigrant from Sweden), I take this opportunity every year to share my dad’s famous “Swedish meatballs” with the center. (Check out the photo from my team’s table at one of our festivals!)

However, we are diverse in more ways than one. We are also intellectually diverse with a variety of educational degrees and backgrounds to show it. At NRDC you can find a mix of scientists, technicians, engineers, business managers, and financial gurus with educational levels ranging from a high school up to PhD’s and everything in between. It is truly place to learn and experience from others and draw on others’ strengths, which brings me to my next point:

Perhaps what makes NRDC so great is that not only are we so diverse (which can often lead to silo-ing) but we are connected. Supporting work for the  Saint-Gobain High Performance Materials (HPM) and Construction Products business units  , NRDC is a living, breathing community whose leaders make extraordinary efforts to promote collaboration and cross-talk whenever possible. From our open work/open door policy fueled environment (read: no offices, not even for managers (HR is only exception)) to our plethora of “Friday Forums” and “Innovate in 18” presentations, we are constantly exposed to other work going on around the center which naturally allows connections to occur. You would be amazed what tidbits you can leverage from a project that is so different than your own on its surface!

You might think this is a no brainer, an R&D center that is innovative, but NRDC goes above and beyond the normal “calling” of research and development. The center fosters innovation, in every sense of the word.  Walk around the center, and you will find idea disclosure sheets on almost every corner and often overhear a cross-business brainstorming sessions happening in our “Innovation Room” where the walls are painted with white erase boards. Keep exploring and you will find our NOVA team which is a team dedicated to developing strategic partnerships with start-up companies all over the world….pretty spectacular! NRDC is constantly striving to not only support current businesses but to expand the horizons for what is possible for the Group (but don’t just take my word for it…it’s right there in its mission statement).

Develop existing businesses

Invent new businesses

Proactively widen our horizon
